John James Audubon: The Birds of America - Currently Unavailable

Profiles American painter and ornithologist John James Audubon (1785-1851), in connection with the exhibition at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., of plates from its original, unbound double-elephant folio of The Birds of America. Audubon's original drawings and engravings with works of art by other period artists tell the unique story of his development as an artist and of his uncompromising devotion to his dream of publishing The Birds of America. The works of art are interwoven with nature photography and footage of the sites significant to Audubon's life and work.

Curator's Comments: Of interest to nature lovers as well as to art lovers. An absorbing story of one man's determination to realize this monumental publication, in spite of all obstacles.
