Rural Communities: Legacy and Change; Capacity to Care

Rural Communities: Legacy and Change is a documentary series about various aspects of rural life. This segment, Capacity to Care, examines the special needs of low-income seniors living in rural communities. Meeting the unique requirements of special populations is costly and challenging to any community. Some rural communities have been able to create models that build on their strength of community and adapt their extremely limited resources. Using the citizens of Wilcox County, Alabama, the program presents the particular problems that many rural elderly poor face. It goes on to show how community members create lasting solutions through teamwork, dedication to each other, and intergenerational involvement. Along with the elderly, concerned members of the communities in Ohio, Alabama, and Virginia also care and support the illiterate and the disabled in their towns.
